Eastern State Penitentiary Announces Four New Site-Specific Artist Installations for 2012
Of special note is stained glass artist, Guggenheim Fellow and Philadelphia resident Judith Schaechter’s “The Battle of Carnival and Lent,” which is an ambitious new work within the penitentiary’s narrow skylights and arched windows. These 17 stained glass windows are inspired by the prison’s dark history and will be installed in historic skylights throughout Cellblocks 8, 11 and 14.

Eastern State Penitentiary hosts a changing series of artist installations and historic exhibits as part of the historic site’s ongoing programming. In 2012 there will be 11 artist installations on view during all public hours, including new installations by artists Lisa Bateman, Tyler Held, Ryan Legassicke, and Judith Schaechter. Join us for a chance to meet the artists and see the new work! Light refreshments served.
