There is a great lineup of glass classes this summer at Bryn Athyn College featuring instructors who are also AGG members. Each full-day class meets Monday – Friday beginning at 9AM for a total of over 32 hours of hands-on classroom instruction with additional evening studio time. 

Great Hall of Glencairn Museum

Participants are treated to behind-the–scenes tours of Glencairn Museum and Bryn Athyn Cathedral. Each workshop costs $675 and includes materials and access to tools. College credit, onsite lodging, and meals are available for an additional fee. Workshop titles and links are listed below. Polyhedral Patcham Pupils

On 30 March 2012, I ran a maths-art workshop at Patcham House School, as part of their Maths Day.

In a one-hour workshop, children pinned 12 pre-made, machine-cut plastic silhouettes of themselves together with plastic cocktail sticks, to form polyhedral shapes with tetrahedral symmetry.

The pieces were created in advance. The children lay on a green screen and were photographed from the stairs above. I then took these images, processed them in Photoshop and turned them into cutting files.

They were cut by the very capable Mark at Brighton & Hove Plastics in Portslade.

Workshops in Italy

IKO studio is a stained glass studio in Italy which began life in Rome, before moving to the lushious green Umbrian countryside, near Orvieto. The studio was founded by stained glass artist, Diego Tolomelli who having achieved over 10 years of experience working with some of the most prestigious stained glass studios in England, returned to Italy.

Workshops in Turkey

Glass Furnace kiln keeps working through the year; it never stops. Neither do education and production activities.

In spring and summer time, existence of foreign glass masters and students livens up Glass Furnace. Workshops continue during the other times of the year.

In these courses at every levels, each person on every experience standards would find a free and creative atmosphere in which they could improve themselves and discover the nature and potential of glass. GlassRoots provides the youth of Newark, NJ with a unique opportunity to develop their minds and their confidence through the creation of glass art. By teaching our students how to master this tradecraft, we not only reveal their immense creative potential, but also tap the cognitive abilities which can help them with school, work, and life.

Sacred Arts at Bryn Athyn College

Winter Session at Bryn Athyn College saw the first class of glass painting at Bryn Athyn taught by artist/educator, J. Kenneth Leap (see below). Eight students participated in the class and learned stained glass techniques including glass cutting, leading, soldering, fusing, painting and silver staining. The students completed a series of panels during the class ranging from simple exercises in leaded glass construction to reproductions of silver stained panels based on renaissance examples. The final project included panels of the students’ own design which had to include a copy of a medieval head and a self portrait. The solutions to this challenge were highly inventive and can be seen below.

Opportunities to participate in an abridged version of this class are available during Bryn Athyn College’s 2012 Sacred Arts Summer Institute. Four-day intensive sessions will be offered June 13-16, June 27-30, and July 11-14. Check out the Bryn Athyn College website for more information.
