There is a great lineup of glass classes this summer at Bryn Athyn College featuring instructors who are also AGG members. Each full-day class meets Monday – Friday beginning at 9AM for a total of over 32 hours of hands-on classroom instruction with additional evening studio time. 

Great Hall of Glencairn Museum

Participants are treated to behind-the–scenes tours of Glencairn Museum and Bryn Athyn Cathedral. Each workshop costs $675 and includes materials and access to tools. College credit, onsite lodging, and meals are available for an additional fee. Workshop titles and links are listed below. Well, I know life is reaching a new height of busy when I look back on the year and realize I never posted about exciting projects that wrapped up months ago. Amidst working on the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital project earlier this year, I also was hard at work on another commission, an art glass wall for the new state-of-the-art J. Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver Simulation Center at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. Read more of this post

Do the Work

I want to thank AGG member Nancy Gong for recommending the book, Do the Work by Steven Pressfield. I don't have a lot of time in my schedule to sit and read but I do listen to audio books all the time in the car and while painting in my studio. This book is short, straight forward and deals with issues creative people struggle with all the time. As soon as I finished it I thought of half a dozen people I wanted to send a copy to. On reflection I realized, like all advice it's better solicited than unsolicited. So look it up and see if you're in a place where you need this book.

AGG Member: Dan Maher - A Good Thing

Troy Moody has been creating original glass artwork around the Valley since the late 90s.

His unique glass art can be found in a variety of places, including custom stained glass in historic homes in central Phoenix and luxury homes in Paradise Valley as well as large-scale public art installations at the Phoenix Convention Center and the Maricopa County Superior Court Tower.

His most recent series, "Home," is the product of traditional glass techniques including blown glass, kiln casting, and glass painting/staining paired with various found objects. The exhibition will show at Practical Art from December 1 through the 31. There will be a reception for the exhibit on the 14. Practical Art is located at 5070 N. Central Ave.

"Home" is a celebration of the diverse characteristics of glass coupled with the found object, according to Moody. He says he hopes to "explore our relationships with the material world and the by-products of our cultural narratives."

"The found objects I incorporate into my work seem imbued with a history, the resonance of life and a memory of function," he says. "The chipping layers of paint, rusted hardware and aged wood grains evoke nostalgia while the glow and sparkle of the manipulated glass becomes anachronistic and contemplative."

Moody also currently has an exhibit at Mesa Contemporary Arts where he teaches part-time, and a temporary installation located at the Scottsdale Civic Plaza, commissioned through Scottsdale Public Art.

ABOUT
Since 1974, the Larry Zgoda has produced unique, original compositions in the forms of windows, doors, screens, clerestories, skylights and walls of glass used in architectural environments. He has also assembled a repertoire of autonomous art objects using stained glass.

Refined workmanship, a focused use of color and a pioneering exploration of the refractive qualities of the materials coalesce with studied, sublime designs to distinguish Larry Zgoda’s original compositions.

“I’ve always been interested in the essential crystalline qualities of glass. The material itself suggests certain geometries that lean toward the straight line. But sometimes I lean the other way, toward the curve.”

Zgoda’s work is known for its geometric elegance, but he does not limit himself to a single design strategy or style. “I tend to explore an idea for a while and move on to another, always evolving a collection of design possibilities.”

Although Zgoda describes stained glass as an essentially simple craft, “the endless combinations of light and refraction, translucency and transparency and texture and color present a wealth of design possibilities. The exploration of these various qualities and one’s fluency with a design vocabulary determines the quality of the art”.

“One of the things that makes stained glass interesting is its long historical tradition and the fact that I have been a part of a renaissance in the craft for the last thirty years plus. There is tremendous opportunity to take what we know from the past and move it into the future, inventing new ways of using glass and light to create beautiful architecture and beautiful environments. The continuum of past to present to future is especially fascinating.”

Fall 2012: Stained Glass Tours & Workshops at Glencairn Museum

September 29, 2012 – TOUR/DEMO: Stained Glass in the Icon Style

Using the unique collection of the Glencairn Museum this tour will explore the relationship between Byzantine Icons and sacred images depicted in stained glass windows. Are icons, as devotional objects, relegated to panel painting only or do stained glass panels, when painted in the Byzantine icon style, also function in that role? We will discuss the meaning of iconography and iconoclasm and discover how sacred images have incited emotions across time. A demonstration of glass painting techniques will round out the day.

November 10 & 17, 2012 – WORKSHOP: Stained Glass in the Icon Style

This class will introduce traditional techniques of glass painting used by stained glass artisans in the medieval and renaissance period. Participants will produce a small panel during the workshop. Students will learn to mix and apply glass based pigments. Proper brush techniques will be covered in detail. All materials provided. No experience necessary.

J. Kenneth Leap has been painting on glass for 25 years. He currently holds a position of President of the American Glass Guild. He is the Stained Glass Artist in Residence at  Glencairn Museum. He is an associate artist at the Wheaton Arts & Cultural Center in Millville, NJ where he maintains a studio and offers additional classes. He teaches at Bryn Athyn College. Glencairn, located in Bryn Athyn, PA was the home of Raymond and Mildred Pitcairn, built in the Romanesque style between 1928 and 1939. Glencairn now serves as a museum of the history of religion. The museum houses an extraordinary collection of French medieval stained glass panels on par with the finest examples in the Cloisters or the Metropolitan Museum of Art. AGG Member Larry Zgoda @ Vale Craft Gallery

For forty years Larry Zgoda has worked in the boundary lands between art and craft. It’s hard to call him a contemporary artist because his work does not seem to address the puzzlement and alienation of postmodern art, but it’s hard to call him a crafter because his combinations of glass, wood and metal seem to offer something deeper than comfort, surprise or entertainment. Following the lead of earlier Chicago designers like Louis Sullivan or his mentor, Edgar Miller, Zgoda’s work is quietly but insistently dynamic, aggressive and bold, with that inner seed-growth energy of which Sullivan wrote. Like the geo-form painters, Zgoda builds up a tension among colored circles, triangles and parabolic lines. But there’s also the translucent/transcendent qualities of the glass that manipulate light in a variety of traditional as well as innovative ways, invoking a sense of mystery and magic. Zgoda creates places of wonder, either site-specific or, as in this group exhibition, as something like portable shrines. These miniature tabernacles are what he calls “architonomous” sculpture, i.e., the space around them feels architectural even if they are autonomous. It’s the same way a medieval head or torso feels when it’s been cut from the wall of a monastery and relocated in an art gallery. As a liturgical artist without a liturgy, there does seem to be some kind of strong, glowing, and benign presence emerging from each piece. But maybe it’s just him. (Chris Miller)

Betti Pettinati-Longinotti, SFO, of Winston Salem, NC, has been designing and producing glass art since an apprenticeship in 1977-78.  She received a BFA from the Maryland Institute, College of Art and her MA from the University of the Arts/ Philadelphia, 1987, in Art Education with a studio major in Glass; MFA in the Visual Arts from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University, June 2012.
