There is a great lineup of glass classes this summer at Bryn Athyn College featuring instructors who are also AGG members. Each full-day class meets Monday – Friday beginning at 9AM for a total of over 32 hours of hands-on classroom instruction with additional evening studio time.

In stained glass we often see he same stale images repeated again and again. I stumbled upon this "behind the scenes" story of the making of several images to promote the National Geographic film "Killing Jesus". The process is fascinating and fresh.

"Technique Is Cheap"

I just used this phrase today in responding to a post on the AGG bulletin board about lamination. I know it has been widely quoted but couldn't remember who said it. [Answer: Harvey Littleton] This is the context in which I find this quote compelling:

"The method used by the contemporary artist is a constant probing and questioning of the standards of the past and the definitions of the present to find an opening for new form statements in the material and process. It is even said that this search is an end in itself. Although knowledge of chemistry or physics as they apply to glass will broaden the artist’s possibilities, it cannot create them. Tools can be made, furnaces and annealing ovens can be built cheaply. But it is through the insatiable, adventurous urge of the artist to discover the essence of glass that his own means of expression will emerge."

Instructors: Kathy Jordan and Melissa Janda share forty years of combined glass painting experience with their students. A unique opportunity with an emphasis on Core Foundational Skills and Production Painting for the studio and independent artist. The curriculum will include:

Explore the art of mixing, applying, and firing glass-based paints, enamels, and stains. While the primary focus of the class is painting on the two-dimensional surface as it relates to stained glass, participants also learn fusing techniques that can be adapted to glass tile-making, jewelry, and mosaic projects. A variety of traditional and experimental techniques will be covered. Participants complete a stained glass panel, which is assembled using lead came, the original material used to construct stained glass windows. Prior glass experience is not required. Returning students may use the studio time to create a more advanced project of their choice.

Classes meet 9-5. On site housing available. Includes special tours of Glencairn Museum's collection of medieval glass and the glass cache at Bryn Athyn Cathedral.
